Syahida Inn, PPB UIN Jakarta - UIN Jakarta's Language Development Center (PPB) held a three-day consignment, September 24 to 26, 2024. This activity took place in a hybrid manner and discussed the internationalization of language teaching standards at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.

The event invited Dr. Islam Yousri El-Hadky (Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakif University, Turkey) and Prof. Dr. Liliana Muliastuti, M.Pd. (State University of Jakarta) as presenters. The activity entitled “Consignment: Internationalization of Language Teaching Standards at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta”, is a follow-up to the previous Forum Group Discussion (FGD) which discussed the inventory of ideas related to internationalization and the determination of student language proficiency standards at UIN Jakarta.

In this consignment, the participants will develop relevant teaching materials and contents that refer to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). The CEFR which is set as a language teaching standard has provided six levels in language teaching. The levels start from A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2.

Benjamin Cook as Senior Assessment Manager of British Council who acted as a resource person at the English language consignment has emphasized the importance of using CEFR.

“CEFR is important because it provides a clear framework for assessing and developing language skills in a structured way across all levels of learning,” he said.

The Head of ESD at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Kustiwan, S.Ag., M.A., Ph.D., explained the target of the consignment.

“The target of this activity is to have a draft teaching material or teaching module that will be finalized and become a product for teaching English and Arabic. We will also create a digital version integrated with the E-Semesta platform,” he explained.

During the consignment, participants involved in the Development of Language Teaching Standardization were lecturers who are members of the Arabic, English and Indonesian language lecturer associations at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. In the activity, the developers also explored A2 and B1 level teaching materials for English and Arabic which include four macro skills, including reading, listening, speaking and writing as well as aspects of vocabulary and grammar.

In addition, in developing the standardization of teaching Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA), each material must contain local wisdom. This was expressed by Prof. Dr. Liliana Muliastuti, M.Pd,.

“A good BIPA book is a book that promotes local culture,” said Liliana.

By holding this activity, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta is expected to improve the quality of language teaching, in line with international standards that have been set. If the target of this consignment can be implemented well, students and lecturers can easily learn independently based on their abilities so that it will make lecturers and students eager to study.

At the end of the consignment, the participants reported the results of their development that had been discussed as a concrete step in the development of language teaching at UIN Jakarta.All materials generated from this consignment will be uploaded and can be accessed by lecturers and students for independent learning.(Alfina Ika Arianti/Abu Bakar Sabirin)
